Where we are how to reach us

Il Palagio is in the heart of the Chianti district, just 17 km from Florence, near Mercatale, on the road to Siena through nine towns of the Chianti Classico San Casciano and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, Greve, Gaiole, Radda and Castellina in Chianti, Barberino Val d'Elsa, Castelnuovo Berardenga, Poggibonsi. Chianti is an ancient territory, of dazzling beauty, the dawn of history already inhabited by the Etruscans and Romans, who alternates between forested hills and vineyards.

Spots wisely designed by men, perched medieval abbeys to isolated and full of historical masterpieces, countryside with magnificent country houses and farms of rough stone to parks that surround elegant noble villas and castles.

Centuries of history and bloody battles took place for the conquest of this special place, combining the charm, history, art and traditions made in Tuscany.

The Castle Il Palagio is surrounded by hills where this huge fresco blend the colors of  the vineyards and the olive tree, the soft green of the meadows and the most intense of the surviving pines, cypresses and woods, handfuls of yellow broom, the expanses golden fields of grain, ocher and brown tones of the land worked by the ancient wisdom of  Tuscan peasants, decorated by the mosaic of vineyards and dry-stone walls, mottled lavender of the irises, the chapels and shrines in the country.

A few hundred meters from the Castle stands the Romanesque church of Santo Stefano a Campoli (Campus Pauli), mentioned in the tenth century. The interior, divided into three naves, has the arches covered with elegant eighteenth-century stucco and plaster.

Three other churches stand a short distance from the Castle.

The Pieve di Santa Cecilia a Decimo, about 5 Km/9 min, a building that under the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries structure preserves the basilica of the Romanesque period.

The Parish of St. Pancras, about 7 Km/12 min., dating back to the most archaic of Romanesque art (the first half of the eleventh century).

The Parish of St. John in Sugana, about 12Km/17 min, recorded since the eleventh century and rebuilt in the late Romanesque shape in the early thirteenth century, retains a "Pietà" attributed to the workshop of Giovanni della Robbia; at the side of Church is a beautiful Renaissance cloister.
